Good to know
Why a GIF from X downloads as an MP4
When you post a GIF on X, it is converted into a short MP4 video that plays on a loop with no sound. The original .gif file is not what X serves to viewers, so there is no GIF on X's servers to hand back to you. Sites that promise a ".gif download" from X are converting the MP4 back into a GIF after the fact.
For most uses the MP4 is the better file. It is usually several times smaller than the same clip as a GIF, and it keeps full colour, while the GIF format is limited to 256 colours per frame. Messaging apps, slide decks and video editors all accept MP4.
If something insists on a real .gif, such as an old forum or a platform that only accepts GIF uploads, convert the MP4 with any video-to-GIF tool. Expect a larger file and some colour banding, which is the GIF format's limit and not a fault in the source.
What people use it for
Recover a video you posted
If the original file is gone from your phone, your own post is often the only copy left. Save it back at the best size X kept.
Watch without a connection
Keep a clip for a flight or a commute where X will not load.
Research and reporting
Keep a copy of a public clip you are writing about, and cite the post's link as the source.
Editing your own brand's content
Pull a clip your team published on X into an edit or a presentation without hunting for the export.
Key facts
| Works with | Public posts on x.com and twitter.com, including links copied from the X app |
|---|---|
| You get | MP4 (H.264 video with AAC sound). MP3 is offered when the video has its own sound track |
| Qualities | The sizes X encoded for that video, typically two to four. 1080p appears only when the upload was 1080p |
| Posts with several videos | Each video is listed separately with its own buttons (a post can hold up to four) |
| GIFs | Saved as MP4, because X stores every GIF as a short silent video |
| Not possible | Protected accounts, posts that need a login to view, live broadcasts and Spaces |
| Price | Free. No account, no app, no browser extension |
If it does not work
- "We found the post, but it has no video in it"
- The post holds images or a link preview rather than an uploaded video. If the video plays from another site (a YouTube card, for example), it is hosted there, not on X.
- "This post is private or needs a login"
- Posts from protected accounts, and posts X hides behind a sensitive-content warning, are only shown to logged-in users. We fetch public posts only.
- The file has no sound
- The original has no sound. Every GIF on X is silent, and some uploads have no audio track. The MP3 option is hidden when there is no sound to save.
- The video is in a quoted post
- A quote post embeds someone else's post. Open the embedded post, copy its own link, and paste that.
- The link has ?s=20 or ?t=... on the end
- That is a share-tracking code from the app. It does no harm, and you can leave it in.

Questions people ask
Is this Twitter video downloader free?
Yes. There is no account, no trial and no paid tier for this tool. To keep the service usable for everyone, one connection can read about 15 links a minute.
Can I download videos from a private (protected) X account?
No. Protected posts are only visible to approved followers who are logged in, and we never log in to anyone's account. If you can see the post only while logged in, we cannot fetch it.
Why is there no 1080p option?
We can only offer the sizes X stored for that video. If the uploader sent a 720p file, or X kept 720p as its largest version, 720p is the best copy that exists anywhere.
How do I download a GIF from Twitter?
Paste the post's link like any other video. You get an MP4, because X stores GIFs as short silent videos. Convert it to .gif afterwards only if something specifically needs that format.
Does it work on iPhone?
Yes, in Safari. The file goes to the Downloads folder in the Files app. To move it into Photos, open it in Files, tap Share, then Save Video.
Does the person who posted it get notified?
X does not send the poster a notification when a public video is saved this way. Downloading is not a like, a repost or a follow.
Is it legal to download videos from X?
Saving a public video for your own offline viewing is a different thing from republishing it. Copyright stays with the creator, so ask permission before you reuse someone else's video. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do you keep a copy of the video or my link?
No. The file is prepared in a temporary folder and deleted within about an hour. Links are not written to our logs. The privacy page explains exactly what is and is not recorded.
