How to download from X (Twitter) GIFs
- 1
Open the post
Find the GIF on x.com or in the X app and tap the post, so it opens on its own rather than in the timeline.
- 2
Copy its link
Tap Share under the post, then Copy link. The link has /status/ in it, followed by a long number.
- 3
Paste it above and press Download
We read the post and list every GIF and video in it, numbered in the order X shows them, each with a preview picture.
- 4
Pick MP4 or Animated GIF for each one
MP4 is the file X keeps and is ready at once. Animated GIF makes the .gif first, which takes a few seconds more. Save as many items from the post as you like.
Good to know
One post can hold four GIFs, and each one is its own file
Most guides describe one GIF per post, and so do X's own developer pages. That rule is for apps that post through X's API. In the X app itself, one post has been able to hold up to four media items since October 2022, in any mix of GIFs, videos and photos. TechCrunch reported the change on 6 October 2022 as "four individual media items, consisting of images, videos or GIFs, in one tweet".
X stores each of those GIFs as a separate MP4. When we read a post with four GIFs on 5 October 2026, X sent four silent MP4 files, from 220 × 192 to 498 × 384 pixels, each with its own length. A downloader that gives back one file per post gives you one GIF out of four. Neither of the two top pages we read in full for "twitter gif downloader" on 7 October 2026, BrandBird and PixelScan, says anything about posts with more than one GIF.
We list every item in the post, numbered in the order X shows them, and each item gets its own buttons. On a post with two short videos that we read on 7 October 2026, both were listed, each with three MP4 sizes, a cover picture and Animated GIF. You can tell a GIF from a video in the list: a GIF has one MP4 size and no MP3, because X keeps a single silent file for it. A video usually has several sizes, plus MP3 when it has sound.
Each GIF also becomes its own .gif, made from its own MP4 at its own size. We never join the four into one file, and we never stretch a small GIF: one that is 220 pixels wide stays 220 pixels wide. Only GIFs wider than 480 pixels are made smaller, and the MP4 button always gives the full size X stores.
What people use it for
Keep the reaction GIFs you use most
Save the GIFs you reply with all the time, so you can send them from your phone's gallery or a chat app without searching X again.
Email newsletters and signatures
Most email apps do not play video, so a looping .gif is the only way to make something move there. Check the .gif's size before you send it.
Save a whole set from one post
A creator posts four GIFs of one scene, or a loop in four steps. Save every item, not just the first one.
Upload where only images are allowed
Old forums, some wikis and many profile settings accept GIF and nothing else. Animated GIF gives you a file they take.
Key facts
| Links that work | Public posts on x.com and twitter.com, including links copied from the Share menu in the X app |
|---|---|
| GIFs per post | Up to four. Since October 2022 the X app lets one post hold four media items in any mix of GIFs, videos and photos. Every GIF and video is listed with its own buttons |
| What X stores | One MP4 per GIF: H.264 video, no sound track, one size only. Of 8 GIFs we measured on 5 October 2026, the largest was 680 × 382 pixels and two were 220 pixels wide |
| MP4 button | The file exactly as X serves it, unchanged. It is the smallest and sharpest copy of the GIF that exists |
| Animated GIF button | A real .gif made from that MP4: 10 frames a second, at most 480 pixels wide (never enlarged), a 128-colour palette made for the clip, set to loop forever |
| Size of the .gif | On those 8 GIFs, our .gif was 4.9 to 25 times the size of the MP4 |
| Videos too | A video in a post that runs 30 seconds or less also gets the Animated GIF button |
| Photos | Skipped. Reading X's pictures needs an account, and we never sign in |
| Not possible | Protected accounts, posts behind a sensitive-content warning, and anything else that needs a login |
If it does not work
- There is no Animated GIF button
- The item is a video longer than 30 seconds. A GIF of a long video grows huge, so we offer the MP4 only. GIFs that were posted as GIFs always get the button.
- The .gif looks grainy or has bands of colour
- A GIF frame holds 256 colours at most, and ours uses 128 to keep the file smaller. Skies, skin and smooth shading show it most. If you can use the MP4, it keeps full colour.
- The MP4 plays once and stops
- X's player repeats the clip by itself, but most video players play an MP4 once. Turn on repeat in your player, or press Animated GIF: our .gif is set to loop forever.
- The .gif is narrower than the MP4
- We make GIFs at most 480 pixels wide to keep them a sensible size. The MP4 button always gives the full size X stores, which was at most 680 pixels wide on the GIFs we measured.
- Some media from the post is missing
- Photos are skipped, because reading X's pictures needs an account and we never sign in. Every GIF and video in the post is listed.
- "This post is private or needs a login"
- Protected accounts, and posts behind a sensitive-content warning, are shown only to signed-in users. We fetch public posts only.
Ways to save a GIF from X, compared
| Method | File you get | Posts with several GIFs | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| This tool | The MP4 X stores, or a real looping .gif made from it | Every GIF listed, each with its own buttons | Public posts only; the .gif is at most 480 pixels wide |
| Right-click and Save | A still picture: the image shown before the GIF starts | No | There is no .gif on the page to save |
| Screen recording | A new video of your screen, compressed a second time | One at a time, by hand | Records the interface too, and loses sharpness |
| Video-to-GIF converter sites | A .gif, after you download the MP4 and upload it again | One file at a time | Two steps, and your file goes to one more website |
| ffmpeg (command line) | Any GIF you like, with full control of size and colours | One command per file | Install it and learn its options |
Questions people ask
How to download GIFs from tweets?
Copy the post's link with Share, then Copy link. Paste it above and press Download. Every GIF in the post is listed: press MP4 or Animated GIF under the one you want.
What format are downloaded Twitter GIFs in?
Your choice. MP4 is the form X stores every GIF in, with no sound. Animated GIF gives you a real .gif file that loops by itself and opens anywhere a picture opens.
Can I download every GIF in a post with four GIFs?
Yes. Each GIF is listed on its own with its own buttons, numbered in the order X shows them. Each .gif is made from that GIF's own file.
Does the downloader work with X.com URLs?
Yes. Links from x.com, twitter.com and the Share menu in the X app all work. A tracking code on the end, such as ?s=20, does no harm.
Is the Twitter GIF downloader free?
Yes. There is no account, no trial and no watermark. One connection can read about 15 links a minute, which keeps the service usable for everyone.
Why does my .gif look worse than the GIF on X?
On X you are watching a full-colour MP4. A .gif holds at most 256 colours per frame, and ours uses 128 at 10 frames a second to keep the size down. If quality matters, keep the MP4.
Can I make a GIF from a Twitter video, not just a GIF?
Yes, for videos up to 30 seconds long. They get the same Animated GIF button. Longer videos get MP4 only, because their GIF would be very large.
How to download images from tweets?
We cannot save photos from X, because reading them needs an account and we never sign in. Open the photo on X and use your browser's or the app's own save option.
Is it legal to download GIFs from X?
Keeping a public GIF for yourself is common, but its maker keeps the copyright, and many reaction GIFs are clips from films or TV. Ask before you reuse one in public. This is general information, not legal advice.
