How to download from Twitch clips

  1. 1

    Copy the clip's link

Open the clip on Twitch, press Share under the video, then Copy Link. In the Twitch app, tap Share, then Copy link.

  2. 2

    Paste it and press Download

We read the clip and test its video file before you choose, which takes a few seconds. To save several clips at once, paste one link per line.

  3. 3

    Pick a size, or Vertical

The size buttons are the wide video as Twitch shows it. Vertical is the tall 9:16 copy for TikTok, Shorts or Reels. Cover picture and GIF sit underneath.

  4. 4

    Find the file

It goes to your browser's downloads folder. On an iPhone it lands in the Files app under Downloads: open it, press Share, then Save Video to put it in Photos.

Good to know

Every Twitch clip is two videos: wide, and a 9:16 copy

Since 28 August 2024, Twitch has made a tall version of every clip by itself. Its help page says it plainly: "Clips are saved in two formats, landscape and portrait." The tall copy is cropped to keep the streamer's camera and the game in frame, and the streamer can choose the layout, Stacked or Full. Whatever they pick is used for every clip made of their channel after that.

Twitch only lets two people download either version: the streamer, for clips of their own channel, and the person who made the clip. Everyone else gets no download button at all. The online clip downloaders we checked on 5 October 2026, Clipsey, StreamLadder, tcdownloader, Boltis and Klipa, all hand out the wide file only. Three of them send you to their own editor to crop it tall again, which throws away the layout the streamer chose and costs another round of video compression.

We measured how common the tall copy is. We took the four most viewed clips of the week from six big channels: summit1g, KaiCenat, xQc, shroud, zackrawrr and caseoh_. All 24 had a 9:16 copy, at 60 frames a second, from 576 × 1024 up to 1422 × 2528 pixels. Twitch names these copies by their width, so its "1080" tall copy is 1080 × 1920. Our Vertical button gives you the largest one. On a 30-second clip it was 5.0 MB, against 7.6 MB for the wide 1080p file.

Those shared numbers caught us out too. Until 5 October 2026, our own 720p button on some clips handed out the 720 × 1280 tall file instead of the wide one. Now the size buttons are always the wide video, Vertical is a button of its own, and a whole channel saved in bulk always gets the wide files. If a clip shows no Vertical button, Twitch has no tall copy of it. If the tall copy has blurred or black bands above and below, that is how Twitch made it, usually because the streamer has not set a layout yet.

What people use it for

Post a clip to TikTok, Shorts or Reels

Streamers and their editors take the vertical copy straight to phone apps, already cropped to the layout the channel set, with no editing app in between.

Keep a moment before it disappears

Streamers can delete any clip of their channel at any time. Save the ones that matter to you while they are still up.

Edit a highlight in full quality

Video editors take the 1440p or 1080p file at 60 frames a second into their editing app for a recap or a montage, with the streamer's permission.

Share a short moment in chat

For a clip of 30 seconds or less, the GIF button makes a small looping picture you can drop into a chat or a forum post.

File typeMP4 with AAC sound. The largest file of all 24 clips used HEVC (H.265) video; the 360p files we checked used H.264
File sizeOne 30-second clip: 7.6 MB at 1080p, 4.0 MB at 720p and 5.0 MB for the 1080 × 1920 vertical copy
Clip lengthUp to 60 seconds, Twitch's limit when someone makes a clip

If it does not work

The file plays sound but no picture, or will not open
Most Twitch clips now use HEVC (H.265) video. On Windows, install Microsoft's HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store, or open the file in VLC. Older editing apps may need the same. The 360p file uses the older H.264 type and plays almost anywhere.
There is no Vertical button
Twitch has no tall copy of that clip. Its help page says the streamer or the clip's maker can make one by editing the clip's layout. Until then only the wide sizes exist.
The vertical copy has blurred or black bands
That is the copy Twitch made: the wide picture placed in a tall frame, usually because the streamer has not chosen a layout. We do not crop or change it.
"That Twitch link is not a single post"
The link points to a channel or its clip list, not one clip. Open the clip itself and copy its link, or use the Whole channel tab to list a channel's clips.
The clip is "no longer available"
The clip was deleted, by the streamer or by the person who made it. A deleted clip cannot be fetched by anyone.
There is no 1440p button
Twitch keeps 1440p only for some streams. In our test summit1g and shroud clips had it, while KaiCenat and xQc clips stopped at 1080p.

Questions people ask

How do I download a Twitch clip?

Copy the clip's link with Share, then Copy Link. Paste it in the box above, press Download and pick a size or Vertical. The MP4 goes to your downloads folder.

Can I download Twitch clips from other streamers?

Yes, any public clip. Twitch's own download button is only for the streamer and the clip's maker, so for other channels you need a tool like this one. Ask the streamer before you repost their clip.

Can I download a Twitch clip in vertical format?

Yes. Twitch saves a 9:16 copy of each clip, and the Vertical button gives you the largest one, for example 1080 × 1920. You do not need to crop the wide video yourself.

Can I download Twitch clips in 1080p or 1440p?

Yes, when Twitch kept that size. The buttons show every size the clip has. In our test of 24 popular clips, all had 1080p and 8 also had 1440p.

Why won't my downloaded Twitch clip play?

The larger sizes use HEVC (H.265) video, which some players cannot show. Install Microsoft's HEVC Video Extensions on Windows, use VLC, or download the 360p file, which uses H.264.

Do the downloads have a watermark?

No. We save the file Twitch sends, unchanged. Nothing is added to the picture and nothing is re-encoded.

Can I download Twitch clips on my phone?

Yes, in the phone's browser. Paste the link here and press Download. On an iPhone the file goes to the Files app; from there, Share and Save Video puts it in Photos.

How long can a Twitch clip be?

Up to 60 seconds. The person making the clip chooses the length with a slider under the video.

Can I download every clip from a Twitch channel?

Yes. Use the Whole channel tab: type the channel's name, see its clips most viewed or newest first, tick the ones you want and save them in one go.

Is it legal to download Twitch clips?

Keeping public clips for yourself is common, but the streamer and Twitch keep their rights. Ask before you publish someone else's clip. This is general information, not legal advice.
