In short

To download a Facebook video or reel, copy its link, paste it above and press Download. Pick 1080p (sometimes 1440p) for the sharpest file, H.264 MP4 for an iPhone or an older phone, or MP3 for the sound. It works for public videos and reels, with no Facebook login, no app and nothing added to the picture.

How to download from Facebook

  1. 1

    Copy the link

On a computer, open the video or reel and copy the address bar. In the Facebook app, tap Share, then Copy link: the facebook.com/share/ link it gives works as it is.

  2. 2

    Paste it and press Download

We read the video and test its file before you choose. On our 30 test videos that took about 2 to 5 seconds. A Page link moves you to the Whole channel tab and lists the Page's videos instead.

  3. 3

    Pick 1080p, H.264 or MP3

Sizes are listed largest first, and 1080p is marked Recommended. For an iPhone or an older phone or computer, pick H.264 MP4 (plays almost everywhere) instead. MP3 keeps only the sound.

  4. 4

    Find the file

It goes to your browser's downloads folder. On an iPhone it lands in the Files app under Downloads: open it, tap Share, then Save Video. Use the H.264 file there. On Android it is in the Download folder.

Good to know

On Facebook, the 1080p file and the file that plays everywhere are not the same

Seven of the ten ranking Facebook downloader pages we read on 11 October 2026 promise 1080p, 2K or 4K. Only one of them, in a question about why a 1080p or 4K file will not play, says anything about what kind of file you get. So we read 30 public videos ourselves: the first five that six Pages show a visitor who is not signed in (NASA, CNN, BBC News, National Geographic, Tasty and 9GAG). 29 of them went to 1080p or higher, and 4 of those to 1440p. None had 4K.

The catch is the codec, the way the picture is packed. On 29 of the 30, Facebook kept every size from 720p up only as AV1 (26 videos) or VP9 (3). Just one, a NASA launch video of 2 hours 27 minutes, had H.264 at 1080p. Facebook also keeps one ready-made file with picture and sound together. We opened it on all 30: it was H.264, and 720p on 29 of them. So on Facebook today you choose between the sharpest file and the one that plays almost everywhere.

This matters most on a phone. Apple lists AV1 playback only for newer iPhones and lists no VP9 at all, and iPhone Photos is reported to refuse AV1 even on an iPhone 17 Pro (our iPhone guide has the details). Until 11 October 2026 our own buttons offered only the AV1 and VP9 sizes for these videos. Now each of them also gets an H.264 MP4 (plays almost everywhere) button with Facebook's 720p file. Pick 1080p to watch in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or VLC on a computer; pick H.264 for an iPhone or anything older.

What people use it for

Save a video to iPhone Photos

Pick H.264 MP4 (plays almost everywhere), then in Files tap Share and Save Video. You get Facebook's 720p file with its sound, in H.264, which Photos takes.

Keep a recipe or a news clip

Pages like Tasty and BBC News post short vertical videos that are easy to lose in the feed. Save the ones you want to watch again, even with no connection.

Keep the sound as MP3

Speeches, sermons, songs and interviews work as sound only. The MP3 button keeps the sound for a phone or a music player.

Get the words

When Facebook has captions, Transcript (TXT) saves what was said as plain text, for notes or quotes. 10 of our 30 test videos had them.

Save while you scroll

Our browser extension puts a Download button on Facebook videos in Chrome, Edge, Brave and Firefox, with the same choices as this page. The guide is at https://raptordownloader.com/docs/extension/.

Key facts

Links that workVideo and reel links from a computer or a phone: facebook.com/…/videos/…, /watch/?v=…, /reel/…, video.php?v=…, m.facebook.com and web.facebook.com. On 11 October 2026 eight forms of one video's link all read the same video. Share links (facebook.com/share/r/… and /share/v/…) and fb.watch links are followed to the video they open; a real /share/r/ link from a public bug report opened its /reel/ address
SizesWhat Facebook keeps for each video. Of 30 public videos from six Pages (NASA, CNN, BBC News, National Geographic, Tasty and 9GAG) read on 11 October 2026, 25 reached 1080p, 4 reached 1440p and 1 stopped at 864p. None had 4K
File typeMP4. Facebook keeps the picture and the sound apart, and we join them into one file. From 720p up, 26 of the 30 videos were AV1 and 3 were VP9. Only 1, a NASA launch video of 2 hours 27 minutes, had H.264 at those sizes
The H.264 buttonH.264 MP4 (plays almost everywhere) is Facebook's own ready-made file with picture and sound. It was 720p on 29 of the 30 videos and 360p on the long NASA video. It appears when every size above is AV1 or VP9, which was 29 of the 30
Sound and MP3Facebook's sound is AAC (the HE-AAC kind) at 47 to 107 kbps on the 30 videos. The MP3 is saved at 192 kbps, which adds no detail beyond that source. A video with no sound track gets no MP3 button
Captions, cover and GIFCaptions as TXT or SRT when Facebook has them: 8 of the 30 had Facebook's automatic English captions and 2 had the uploader's own. The cover picture saves as JPG. Videos of 30 seconds or less also get an Animated GIF button (10 of the 30)
File size and limitsOur files came to 9 MB a minute at 1080p on a wide NASA video and 16 MB a minute on a tall CNN one. Facebook's H.264 file ranged from 2 to 26 MB a minute. Limits: 3 hours per video and about 1 GB per file. Each download button works for 30 minutes
Reels and vertical videosFacebook's help page says that from the end of September 2025 every new video is posted as a reel. 25 of our 30 were vertical (9:16). A reel link and a video link give the same choices here
Whole PagesPaste a public Page's link (for example facebook.com/NASA) in the Whole channel tab (beta) to list the videos Facebook shows a visitor who is not signed in: 9 to 21 per Page on the six we tried, in 11 to 18 seconds. Steps: https://raptordownloader.com/docs/website/whole-channel/
Not possiblePrivate, friends-only and group videos, stories, anything that needs a Facebook login, and live videos while they are still live. We never sign in to Facebook
Price and watermarkFree. No account, no app. We add nothing to the picture: the file is the one Facebook sends, with only the sound joined

If it does not work

"Facebook did not tell us which video this share link opens"
The share link did not lead to a public video. Open it in your browser, and when the video plays on its own page, copy that address (it contains /reel/, /videos/ or watch?v=) and paste it. In our test, a share link that led to a group post gave this message.
"This video is private or needs a login, so the site will not show it to us"
The video is for friends only, sits in a group, or Facebook wants a login to show it. We never sign in, so only public videos work. Old mbasic.facebook.com links give this too: open the video on www.facebook.com and copy that link.
"The site sent back something we did not expect, so the video could not be saved"
We saw this for a video number that does not exist. Open the link in a private browser window: if it does not play there without a login, it cannot be downloaded. If it plays, press Try again. It can also mean Facebook changed its page (yt-dlp has an open report of this, issue 15161).
The video will not play, or will not save to iPhone Photos
The 1080p and 1440p files are AV1 or VP9 on most Facebook videos. Play them in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or VLC, or download again with H.264 MP4 (plays almost everywhere), which Photos and older players take.
There is no MP3 button
The video has no sound track. One reel we tested had no sound on Facebook either. If you hear sound when it plays on Facebook, paste the link again: the MP3 button appears whenever Facebook lists a sound track.
"We could not recognise that link as a video"
The link points at a group or another page that is not one video. Open the video itself so it plays on its own page, then copy its link.
"Facebook did not show this page's videos to us"
The Page may be private, have no videos, or ask visitors to log in. Paste the links of single videos or reels in the One or many videos tab: those work one by one.
"That file is larger than the size limit we can process"
Our limit is about 1 GB per file. At 1080p our test files used 9 to 16 MB a minute, so a long broadcast can pass it. Pick H.264 MP4 or MP3: the H.264 file was smaller than the 1080p one on both videos we compared.

Questions people ask

How do I download a video from Facebook?

Copy the video's link (Share, then Copy link, or the address bar), paste it in the box above and press Download. Pick a size, H.264 MP4 or MP3, and the file goes to your downloads folder.

Can you download Facebook videos from someone else's page?

Not with Facebook's own option: its help page says "You cannot download reels or legacy videos created by others." A public video on anyone's Page can be saved here. Ask the owner before you reuse it.

Can I download Facebook videos in 1080p or 4K?

1080p, yes, on most: 29 of the 30 public videos we read on 11 October 2026 reached 1080p, and 4 reached 1440p. None had 4K. Those sizes were AV1 or VP9 on 29 of the 30, so for an iPhone pick H.264 MP4, which is 720p.

How do I download Facebook videos on iPhone?

Open this page in Safari, paste the link and press H.264 MP4 (plays almost everywhere). The file lands in Files, under Downloads: open it, tap Share, then Save Video. The 1080p files are AV1 or VP9, which Photos may refuse.

Can I download Facebook Reels?

Yes, public ones, from a /reel/ link or the app's share link. Since the end of September 2025 Facebook posts every new video as a reel, so reels and videos give the same choices here.

How to download Facebook video to MP3?

Paste the link and press Audio only (MP3). We make it from Facebook's own sound track, which was HE-AAC at 47 to 107 kbps on our 30 test videos, so the MP3 sounds like the video, not better.

Can you download Facebook live videos?

Not while they are live: we turn away a stream that is still going on. Once it ends and Facebook keeps the video, paste its link like any other. Our limit is 3 hours per video; a NASA launch video of 2 hours 27 minutes read fine on 11 October 2026.

Why can't I download my Facebook video?

In the Facebook app, only reels you posted after September 2025 have Download reel (Options, then Download reel). Facebook's help says older videos keep their old options, and a reel that uses someone else's original audio downloads muted. If your video is public, you can paste its link here.

Can I download private Facebook videos?

No. Friends-only videos, group videos and stories need a Facebook login, and we never sign in or ask for your password or a page's source code. If it is your own video, use Facebook's Download reel option, or make it public for a moment.

Is it legal to download Facebook videos?

Meta's Terms (effective 1 January 2025, section 3.2) say "You may not access or collect data from our Products using automated means" without Meta's permission, and the uploader keeps the copyright. Your own videos are fine; for others, ask first. This is general information, not legal advice.
